Aiptasia

I noticed there were a few threads concerning aiptasia removal hanging around, so I thought I'd post one. I accidentally got rid of one the other day haha. To make it short a nearby frogspawn ATTACKED it with sweeper tenticles!! I noticed the next day the anemone was withered and white.. now its gone!

Natural elimination!

Are Sweepers actually different from the other tenticles... it alwasy looks like it's just the regular ones getting thinned out so that they can reach futher.

If all tenticles are the same, I would think I couild just pick up a galaxia frag and go around the tank brushing the Aiptasias proactively.

Anyone had luck with this approach?

While I don't have direct evidence of this, I have heard that using an elegance coral and brushing it against them is very effective at killing them.

These should never have been kept in a captive situation. Destined to die, and when they do, they will foul up the tank something fierce.

well i just have one left that i can see, so a purchase would be bad idea for him. Ill just let my friends in the tank take care of him

I have run across people on reef sites who keep a separate aptaisia culture tank going to feed their Berghia verrucicornis, they will reproduce in captivity. If you want to keep them, here are two good articles.

Here is a nice article by Anthony Calfo. He says:

Among the traditionally difficult, if even possible to keep, specialized members of the Aeolid nudibranchs, Berghia are not only attractive, easy to keep, and easy to breed… but they also readily consume one of the most bothersome pest organisms in marine aquaria: Aiptasia anemones (AKA glass anemones).

This felt good...I had an aptaisia that popped up on one of my decroative shells in my tank...it was disposible so, I torched it with my zippo, I think I heard it scream...so evil, but so good. :twisted:

I just torch them with a stick lighter. Or if you have a blowtorch, use that. All this business about injecting kalkwasser, getting fish and nudibranchs that eat them...silly. Just torch it, and it's dead. End of story.
