I ordered the Aqua C Remora to set up my new 20g tank (not disposed of the old big one yet, but still...) and thought the drain fitting would be a useful thing to have (in that general, not really thinking things through kind of way...).

Now I look at it, I'm a little confused as to the best way to set things up. Anyone have the same skimmer with the same fitting and ideas/photos?
I'm actually currently thinking it might be simplest to simply block the drain off/turn it to face upwards and clean the cup the normal way.

Did people connect it to a hose or what?

Boy do I feel thick. Any help much appreciated....

OK, panic over. I've had a closer look at the drain fitting and it looks really simple. And breathe...

One of the benefits of being in a different time zone. I was able to work this out before someone pointed out my idiocy...

I have a suggestion, unless you are going to plumb it right to a drain, and even in that case I would still do this. Put a valve on the drain hose that is attached to the drain fitting.

Once in a while the skimmer will go nuts and fill up with water, it only took me coming home once to water spilling out of the jug I put to collect the drain fluid to do something about it.

I used clear plastic hose and a valve I cannibalized off of a Canister filter.

Hope that helps...

Very helpful. Thanks Knucklehead. :D

BTW, did you also go for the overflow filter box? If so, how did you get it to stay in the right place? Mine just seems to want to lift away from the glass or tilt up on one side and there doesn't appear to be a way to fix it to the glass properly...

I threw mine on my sump which is all overflow from the main tank so I didn't buy the overflow box.

If you can't get it to stay properly, look on www.proteinskimmer.com, they are very helpful...

Thanks again. I'll have a butcher's (translation for non-cockney English speakers - butcher's = butcher's hook = look). :)

I have one with a drain fitting I put a hose on it and ran it to a gal. jug. I find not much use for it except for when I am on vacation and not able to, or trust anyone to clean out the cup.

Thanks Martin. I've found the same thing so far. It's not taking out enough to need the fitting (though it has to be said, that's hardly surprising with only one Trimma goby in there).

Just remember to keep a large jug under it.

Every once in a while mine goes nuts

Probably more to do with what is on my hands than anything else I suppose

Mine stops working completely if I stick my hands in. I have a large plastic bottle sitting at the end of the hose just in case though.

I don't use a drain on my Remora. One of the key features of these skimmers is they can't overflow as the water will just return to the tank. If you are using a drain and the skimmer goes nuts for some reason the skimmer can dump enough water to overflow the drain/container and cause the pump to run dry.

It is just as easy to dump the cup as to dump a larger container and you don't need to hide another hose or container.

I use the overflow on my 29g - the overflow is quite large though so it will eat a lot of room in a 20g, Tom.

Thanks for the advice Andy. I've managed to hid the body of the overflow box with some live rock, but I don't think I'd ever recommend people buy it, mostly for the buoyancy issue.

I've not had to use the larger container yet. I can see what you're saying about the dangers of relying on it.

i have a rigid 2 gallon bottle for my drain. i usually dump it when it gets to only 1/4 way full. my skimmer once went crazy with very wet foam because i used epoxy and the bottle overflowed, it was a stinky mess! i cant fit a much bigger drain bottle in my tight cabinet space so i put a float switch in my bottle to shut off my skimmer in case it goes crazy again.
