I am about to buy a new pump for my 54 gal. reef tank. The sump contains another 6 gals of water. I am interested in the Pentair Quiet One pump. Which one would be best for my system, the 3000 rated at 780 GPH or the 4000 rated at 1017 GPH? I had a Supreme Mag drive that lasted for years but I heard these run hotter than the Quiet One by Pentair. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

780gph is plenty of flow a 54 gallon but i would go with the bigger pump and turn down the flow using a ball valve if it is too much. bigger gives you more options.

You're going to lose some flow to head loss and any turns in the PVC so keep that in mind. I'm running the QO 4000 and have a PVC gate valve inline after the pump to throttle back the flow if needed.

Go with the one that most closly matches the one you are running now. Make sure you put a valve on the outlet side incase you need to choke it some.

Marine Depot recommended to me the Mag series instead of Quiet Ones. I have been using a Mag 7 for years with no problems. I was wanting to upgrade a little, and they recommended a Mag 9.5 instead of the Quiet One. You might give them a call and let them explain.

Good Luck.

If heat is an issue, I'd also consider Eheim. They run noticably cooler to the touch then Mags IME. Pricey suckers though :?
