I've been to Shedd and it is by far the most impressive aquarium I've ever been too. Haven't been to Atlanta yet, but plan to over the holidays. If it's even close to being as impressive as Shedd, I'll be thrilled.

From what I understand the big tank at Atlanta has tens of thousands of the same species of fish like jacks and golden trevallys. Lots of fish, not much diversity.

Well, I must jump on this bandwagon, seeing as I work at the Steinhart in San Francisco. Blatantly partial, in 2008 we will have the largest LIVING coral reef display(no fake corals), over 225,000 gallons, and over 150 2000 watt bulbs plus natural sunlight. Now that is an electric bill. Having said that, I would love to visit Georgia's new aquarium, is sounds awe-inspiring...

Here's a pic from December 2003 - right before it closed:

Yeah, that was a really great tank too! We still have the clams and the large sarcophytons are still going strong. We are going to be growing out corals for almost two years to stock the tank for the opening(!).

They are talking about having a crew of over 100 volunteer divers... hint, hint...

Bart was showing me some pics of the old tank...very impressive! There was a great big purple Acro colony that was just HUGE.

Does anyone have pics of the new Georgia reef? I like the concept...the glass curves up over your head so you can look straight up and see the waves coming. They have several large dump buckets mounted at the top, and a lagoon in the back.

There are a lot of pics from people who have visited the GA aquarium at the atlanta-southeastern marine aquarium society website. There are some great pics. I will be going after christmas leave. I talked to a few of the people in my reef club that were there for the opening and a couple that got in before the opening. All have said it was great. The first week it was open alot of people had the complaint that they were pushing people too fast. But I haven't heard anyone complain of it since.

Is there a curve to that tank near the top? Or is it so big it wraps around the curvature of the entire universe!?

The grouper shot just shows that anything is possible in a tank. We're all told not to put small fish in with predators, yet when you go to a public aquarium you see scenes like this. I bet they GORGE that grouper with food so that he doesn't go hunting. 8O

I'm off now to go find a green chromis to put in a tank with a grammistes sexlineatus soapfish.
