Hey all,
So after getting my new lighting (250 14W pendant) and sump/fuge in place, I thought I had everything ready for SPS. After having everything setup and (I thought) stabilized, I received several SPS frags via Ebay. I acclimated them very carefully and put them in my tank. A plating monti unfortunately bleached out, but everything appeared fine for a couple of days.
To my dismay, I came home from work one day to find the temperature up at 86 degrees with some of the frags (acro and 2 poci) starting to sluff their skin. I ran out to my LFS, got screwed on a small fan and set it up on a timer. The next day, my temperature was still up in the mid to high 80's with nighttime temp in the mid 70's. The acro and 2 poci were done for and two others started to go. I was baffled.
Well, turns out that my Ebo-Yager (sp?) decided to crap itself after two years and would not turn off. So I've replaced it (again, ripped off at the LFS) and temp has stabilized to 79.6 degrees (also bought a high-low digital thermometer at Home Depot).
My question is what to do with the two frags that have started to go. The recession seems to have haulted, but after reading about RTN in Borneman's Aquarium Corals book, I' scared that these frags will bring down my remaining SPS frags. I have a few LPS in the tank as well, but am not too concerned about them (bubble, torch, trumpet).
I could attempt to frag the healthy tips, but am scared that this will further stress these already hurting frags. They are all very small (about an inch or so tall). Is there hope for a colony after the base starts to succomb?
Thanks a ton,
Tony
btw, my tank is a 26 bowfront with a 10 gallon sump (8 gal capacity) with a mag 5 return on a SQWD, three maxi 600s on a Natural timer. I have a 3" sand bed with 40# rock and chaeto and sand in a 3.5 gal fuge. It is on an 8 hour photoperiod with 450 Ca and <10 ppm nitrates. pH is steady at 8.2 with regualr additions of coral vite, Iodine, and dt's.
