protein skimmer adjustment too sensitive

I'm using a Coralife 220 needlewheel skimmer on my 90 gal (in the sump) and I can't seem to get it adjusted right. The slightest adjustment to the output valve can be the difference between no foam and the cup filling in seconds. Even when I do manage to get it adjusted just right after a couple of days it may start overflowing like crazy or produce nothing at all.

I have it setup such that the water input and output levels are always at constant levels.

Any suggestions?

I've got the same skimmer, and same problem. I lowered the water level in my sump, which allowed me to adjust better. I absolutely love this skimmer though. It really works well.

Jim, I don't own the skimmer, but some insight on skimmer performance. New skimmers need a couple of weeks to break in (has mostly to do with the residual compounds on the manufacturered parts interfering with formation or breaking of foam). During this time, some designs may be very difficult to dial in. If your skimmer is new, give it some time to settle down.

The other thing to note about skimmers is their performance is always going to vary from time to time. IME, skimmers seem to go through cycles in terms of performance efficacy. They'll skim well for a few days, "sleep" for a few days, ad naseum.

With that said, I would set your skimmer up right now so it is producing the dry or no foam. Once it breaks it, the foam production will naturally increase and stablize.

to piggy back on Len....

I usually fill my bathtub with hot water and run my new skimmer a few hours in there... it helps get rid of some of the compounds used to make the thing... you could try that and see if works for ya

This skimmer is about 8 months old so it should be broken in by now. I wonder if I added a gate valve to the intake if that would help.
