Well I finally diid it. I tore the tank down. I built a coral rack for the corals for now.

I am going ot try "cooking" the LR to see what happens. If it gets too bad I will get new LR so what do I have to loose.

What a mess the tank was.

Here is the tank now.

This is a picture of the tank would look like after a week from scrubbing.

Look at this water. That is after scrubbing the LR.

How long does it take before the LR starts dumping itself? I have the rock in a rubbermaid with a heater and a powerhead aimed across the surface.

You know, back in the day a tank wasn't considered really seasoned and ready for livestock unless it had a healthy growth of filamentous algae; I believe it was called awfuchs or some weird german word.

I got some filamawhoozitz algae too... I've actually got two tanks, a 135 and a 50, they share the same water supply, but have different lights, flows etcs and one thing I noticed is one tank has a lot more, and this is due to flow on the rocks. I mean ok sure whatever you got a Tunze in there, but does it blow all the crap off the rocks. One part of the tank which has an old fashioned powerhead with a Hydor flow only 300gph but its a fairly strong stream, well in the arc that thing is going the rocks are clear of all algae, now the other side of the tank has a Seio620 (620gph) and there is algae all over the place, because while the thing can move volume it really doesn't do much to blow crap off the rocks.

Rob,
I have been "cooking" my rock for three months now and still have algae and red and pink corlaline algae. Its in an orange 5 gal bucket and looks very porus but I am holding out untill a algae is gone. I change the water once a month and not too much stuff is comming out any more.

Just sharing.

I don't know if you do it or not, but if you have a turkey baster, I usually pull a rock out every so often and stick the turkey baster into the holes of the rock and just squirt water in until most of the crud stops coming out. Maybe once every other month or so on maintenance day. The bigger rocks that I cant take out I just do in the tank with an extra filter running and a water change. So far I have had pretty good luck with it and on my last tank a few years back as well. Not sure if that would help your rock cook faster or not, but just a thought.

Teddy- do you have it in the dark? My rock that's currently in a container in my basement still has corraline, which is fine by me, but the filamentous algae and polyps are long gone.

Its in an orange Home Depot bucket with a top on. Maybe there is enough light going through the bucket? It is in the laundery room so light are on half the day I guess.

hmmm - This brings up a good question.

The tub I have mine in is a blue rubbermaid. It is probably letting some light in but not directly if you know what I mean.

Is that a problem?

Ideally you want no light at all. You could prop the lid for the rubbermaid tub across the top, but don't seal it completely. You still need some open area for gas exchange.

I cooked some LR in a bucket for about 3 months, and not two days after it went in my tank out pop 3 aiptasia. But, then again, I also found a tiny little chili coral that had survived too.

Well, I think I did a bad thing here. Since removing all te LR from the tank the water is getting cloudy and the corals are looking so so.

I should have just dumped the corals off at the LFS and called it a day.

Well, today you can barely see the corals in the tank.

The rock in the tub has done noting so far.

Am I wasting my time here with this re-curing?

Its only been a week, give it some time. Like 4 months and then take a look and say nothing has happened. Sounds like the tank is having a baterial bloom, couldnt hurt to leave on piece of LR in there.

4 months for cooking? I thought I read it was like 4-6 weeks.

If its 4 months then I will just get new LR now.

Here we go again...........
