Dont know really maybe some sort of sponge, but I would think it would be easy to get off if it was a sponge a lot of them are real soft.

Dude

That is actually "The Blob"

I know I know, you are going to say the blob was black.

Well, DUH!

That was before color Television!

The Blob was of course Bright red, and it started out in a fish tank.............

Now, are ya gonna get any sleep tonight?

Doesn't really look porous enough to be a sponge.

Is it hard or soft? Are there any holes/openings in it? Is it attached only in one spot, or attached everywhere it comes close to the rock?

It is red buble algae. Firm to the touch and slick like glass?
Pop one and you will see it is water filled with a red skin.
