Your thoughts on the following please:

1. How big does an evil crab have to be in relation to a fish before it can take the fish? Can a crab that is smaller than a fish have any chance of snagging it while it sleeps?

2. How bad would it be for me to take an evil crab and release it into the wild? I feel bad for this evil crab and I don't know what to do with him. I don't want to leave him in my tank and no store is going to want him. I could give him a chance at freedom. :?

3. Has anyone actually seen a mithrax crab kill a healthy fish or know for sure that it did it?

Flush him down the toilet! All pipes lead to the ocean! err... umm, what?

Seriously, I hate the little bastards, but if you have a conscious, just take him to the beach and throw him in.

Only problem with that is the possible introduction of a bad species to a different area.

ex: The sea lamprey in the great lakes, zebra mussels, eurasian water milfoil, etc.

Hmm... point taken. Okay, if you have a conscious, then broil & butter him

Sump him. If you don't have a sump then take it to the LFS they willl have a place for him. Don't introduce him to the wild.

Bah pop him in the blender with the shrimp and fish and stuff you make fishfood with.

Let the fish "nibble" on him.

Dont let it go in the wild. Chop it up, feed it to the fish you were worried about getting eaten by the crab.

But can you give me a reason?

The emerald crab is from the Caribbean, manny lives in Miami… it’s pretty much home for the crab, no? Not like he’s releasing it in Virginia Beach or Honolulu. Perhaps I’m thinking too simplistically about this…

Even if this particular crab was not a native species, it is only one crab with no mate in my tank and therefore it cannot breed a population in the new location.

That might be too simplistic too.

I was thinking about going to a park and acclimating the crab to the water at a rocky mangrove shore.

WE now have Boa and Python snakes big enough to tackle 6 foot long gators. Frogs bigger than most cats. Parrots and Macaws. Iguanas and who knows how many other types of lizzards running wild.

The local canals and rivers near me? The common minnow has been "bred" out and replaced with guppies and guppie hybrids.

Plecostumus 2 feet long have taken over the lake bottoms.

The list goes on and on. Not to mention all the weeds.

Now adding one crab or not aint gonna change anything much, its just the idea.

Maybe it has some sort of microscopic pathogens on it that could be bad.

Maybe YOU have some sort of microscopic pathogen, that doesn't mean we throw you in the sump!

Hey, two things for you:

a) I shower regularly,
b) I dwell in the Sump voluntarily, and
c) I'm non-toxic to most other humans*

Maybe this particular species is not native to Miami (GO DOLPHINS! by the way) and maybe some other aquarist will do the same exact thing that you do. This is always just a bad idea. Just like the schmuck that put a lake trout in yellowstone lake cause he thought it was native . . . WRONG. Now the entire ecosystem in the lake is nearly destroyed.

Ah, good thinking. That may have convinced me not to release him.
