I'm just in the process of moving my tank into my living room, which is carpeted. I have an AGA 75G with AGA stand. Just wondering what others have done to protect their carpets from any small water spills? I'd like to avoid any mildew, etc. I am thinking of spreading a plastic sheet under the stand and trimming around the edges.

I am thinking of making the plastic larger than the base of the stand so that any water that got through the stand would only sit on the plastic and evaporate without affecting the carpet. I also thought that the weight of the tank/stand would keep water from out side the stand from getting underneath the plastic. Does that make sense?

What do you do to protect your carpet?

After over 18 years of aquariums I have never had a problem with a ruined carpet or hardwood floor when ive moved. I have never done any thing to prevent problems other than putting down a couple towels so set my FW rocks on during a major tank cleaning. With SW, you arent going to be removing rocks. So if you are careful, You really shouldnt be getting water on the floor except in very small unoticable amounts.
Now if you get a leak. A piece of plastic under your stand is not going to help matters. It will likely slow any drying time and promote mold growth.

hehe I've kept aquariums for only about 10 years, and have had problems. If you're like me you will EVENTUALLY have somthing spill over. The last time I moved my stand I had a nice purple meldew stain on the floor that wouldn't come up. That stand actually sat FLAT on the floor. One thing I've done to avoid this is to make sure your tank has some sort of breathing room under the base. I added legs to mine to get some air under there. Then, even when you do spill somthing, you can get circulation under there to keep it from making a mess.

better safe than sorry.

Just my 2 cents.

I have been keeping fish for about 11 years now. I've fluctuated between 1 and 8 tanks set up at any one point and had to move at least half a dozen times. Water spills at some point (Like when my blue linka managed to squeeze through the grate in my overflow and set up house in the drain pipe, I'm still not sure how he managed that). My best advice is to use a nice blower fan if a major spill happens. My freind has a bounce house so I just borrow his when something like that happens. The house doesn't smell very nice for a few days, but it has kept mold and discoloration from happening so far.
