Rubble in a canister filter

hey guys, I have asked about rubble before. but have 1 more question.

If I put rubble in my FO tank canister filter what does it replace? the carbon or the bio media?

If it were me.. I would replace the mechanical (sponge) and the biomedia and when I didnt need carbon, I would replace that too..

I can't see any real benefit on putting rock rubble in a canister filter ... chances are the std bio filter media has greater surface area than the rock rubble and the high water flow/oxygen levels will prevent any denitrification that live rock may otherwise provide.
