I'm planning a new acrylic aquarium thats going to measure 24lx20hx20d (approx 45gals) with a built in overflow. I was thinking of a 1 inch drain and two 3/4 inch returns that come up through the overflow. Does anyone see a problem with this return setup? Also has anyone ordered an aquarium from glasscages.com?

Thx

My 300G tank came from glassgages and I am plenty happy with it.

You plumbing sounds fine, but it wouldn't hurt to make the drain line bigger than 1". I'd go with 1.25 or 1.5" if there is enough room in the overflow for it.

That is one thing I wish I had done differently on my 300G. I have 1.5: drains and should have went with 2".

But it is all relative to how much flow you need to push through your sump. I was gunning for 2000GHP and came up short. Doh!

I have a 240 and a 125 from glasscages. I bought them about 3 years ago, Sloppy on the silicone, I think he has gotten better, But it is a great tank and who can beat the price. Nice guy to deal with too, unless you tick him off, as I understand he can be fisty.

Suggestions

Go with 26lx26wx24tall. You will not need much extra or even anything extra to go this size. The price of the tank will not increase much the extra space will go a long way with aquascaping. Also the larger foot print will give you more room under the stand for your gear. Go with the larger drain. I have a 1" drian on my 60 and wish I would have gone with 1.5". The 1" handels the flow I have but does not leave me much of a cusion. The returns sound fine.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm going to go with the 1.5 drain and two 3/4 returns. I'm also going to see if glasscages will build my tank with the overflow box glued to outside back of the tank. The overflow box will measure 16lx10hx5d. With overflow slits cut into the back wall of the tank 14" across that will drain into the overflow box. Someone on this site did this to a 20 gal tank looked pretty cool. With the overflow box on the back and the back wall made of black acrylic the tank should look nice and clean. I'll keep you guys posted of my progress.

Thx

No prices on envisions site

I really want to go to a 200ish acrylic, I cant go glass as I have to move someday, and acrylic is very easy to move

my old 220g was moved by my wife and I, no extra help needed

wish glass was that light, even a 180g is heavy as hell

something 8'long, 2' wide and 20" tall would be nice, I can split the cabinet with 2 4' cabinets, lots easier to move

Envision is a pure custom shop. Send him the specs and he'll send a quote back in a really reasonable time. James is a good guy to work with.

I sent my deposit via paypal to SoCal Creations to start building my 26x26x24 aquarium. After getting some good advice from this forum this is how I’m going to do it. The overflow box will be plumbed for a 1” return, 1” return from the closed loop using a Quiet One 6000 pump and an Ocean Motions Super Squirt Compact plumbed with black pvc pipe and fittings from Savko. 1.5” drain using a gatevalve at the sump to control the water level in the overflow box, 1.5” emergency drain, 1” drain drilled in front of the overflow box on the bottom of the tank to feed the Closed loop. I had a local plastic shop cut some acrylic to size for a sump I put together that measures 23lx14wx18h that will hold my Euro Reef 6-2 skimmer and mag18 return pump. Next to the sump will be a DIY Nurce water top off system that I mix with Kalk. The lighting will be a PFO 250watt HQI mini pendant using an Ice Cap ballast and a 14k Phoenix bulb. I’m having a light rack custom made that will be secured to the back of the stand and hang the pendant over the center of the tank, should look pretty cool. I’m building the stand right now that measures 30lx28dx40h. I’ll post pic’s as soon as I get the tank. In the meantime any suggestions?
