Are the tangs venomous? I thought that they only hurt physically (as opposed to some urchins, lionfish, etc.)...

Tangs are not venomous. However, I'm sure they carry some nasty bacteria.

Acanthurus, Naso, and Ctenochaetus all have species with venomous spines on the caudal peduncle. I'm not positive that Zebrasoma tangs do or not. Some species of Naso have venomous anal, dorsal, and pelvic spines like Siganus spp. as well.

I recently downsized my reef to a smaller tank, and took my largest fish away to new homes. As I was cornering my achilles, my yellow tang dashed by and smacked me good with his little spine..clearly was not pleased at my intentions lol. Luckily, it only really hurt for a moment, but its still unnerving..you never know what will cause a good anaphylactic reaction :).

yellow tangs have spines that will sting you??!!?!?! wow. didnt know that.
