pppftt...nothing beats the good old taste test. 
fwiw...i have both a refractometer, and a hydrometer.
My hydrometer works as well as the refractometer, but without the comparison from the refractometer, i would never have trusted it.
Almost 2 yrs, and hydrometer still works fine...just a matter of making sure to rinse it out every usuage with good water.
