I have an EV-120 Skimmer and I can not get it to keep a steady flow of skim. Sometimes the liquid gets so light and sometimes it works great and gets so dark and smells terrible. But when it's light in color it does not smell at all. I tried everything in the book including what the Owner of EV systems asked me to try.

Does anybody have a good solution to get this skimmer to work? I'm ready to ask for my money back on this one! And yes I have tried it out of the sump and in the sump. I have tried everything possible that I can think of.

All skimmers will do that a little bit

but not as drastic as you describe, do you run carbon? I've found it helps keep the skimmer stable, not much, I use a duetto

If you do upgrade, personally I will never run a non becket style skimmer again, they just work too well

Yes I do run Carbon, but for the life of me I will never understand why this skimmer is so touché. It really gets so frustrating not only to get it working ok but keeping down the Nitrates when it does not work

That skimmer goes flat very easily, from thing like feeding oily food (some mysis, frozen cyclopeeze) to stirring up southdown.

The quality of the skimmate is another matter. Many people these days think that thin wet skimmate is actually a better way to go, and I think the reasons behind that make some sense. If its making nice foam I'd probably be happy, and not too concerned about what the skimmate looks or smells like.

The two thing to watch out for in that skimmer (as you have probably heard) is salt creep in the air intake, and small objects clogging the water injector. Get a easy remove firring so you can check them on occasion.

And of course, clean the thing weekly.
