removing center brace from a 65 gal all-glass

I have a 65 gal all-glass and was wondering if anyone has had experience removing the plastic brace that is attached to the trim across the tank. I'd like to use a single MH fixture across the top but the this brace would block a lot of the light...

I would recommend against it. Its not there for looks.
