Sohal Tang began picking at Tiger Tail Cuke :?

Cuke lets out all its sticky innards 8O

Tang proceeded to eat said innards :x

Cuke's now deceased :(

I'll let you know tomorrow if the Tang follows suit :?

From what I know of halothurin (not a lot) I would expect the Tang to be dead within seconds as well as every other vertebrate in the tank.

If they're still alive you're safe.

ouch... some time back I had a nice green haddoni (in hindsight I knew I wasn't ready), percula starts hosting (joy!) few days later the stomach of haddoni comes out... hmmmm ok.... I notice a few hours later I notice the percula eatting the bits of flesh! Haddoni was no more :(

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, Karl.

My system is cukeless FWIW.

Thanks for the encouraging words everyone. As of this evening, both Tangs are fine. Really, they both should already be dead from all the snotty dinos they were feasting on during the algae cycle last month.

Maybe they're from the Canadian Weapon X program like Wolverine

I don't know if that is spicy, since it seem to be more of a bitterness than anything else... ;)

I've got the perfect idea! How about you taste one and let us know? You can also answer Nautilus' question while you're at it. Big bites, please.

I've read that most aren't poisonous to the degree where it would wipe out your whole tank in 60 seconds. I remember a very informative article about it in Advanced Aquarist. LiveAquaria states that the Tiger Tail Cuke (H. hilla) does not have Cuvierian tubules, yet there they were in all its glory, sticking to the face of my Sohal :?

It seems that the most toxic are the sea apples, and even than, not all specimens of the same species are equally toxic. Seeing as how 'cuke nuke' incidents are so rare, I would agree that most aren't as dangerous as their reputation suggests.

I'm not eating one, though :P

I've eaten them. It was a spicy dish but I doubt the spice came from the Cuke. It was pretty good.

I think everything's going to be fine. Tank and inhabitants are still normal. I was prepared to do a large WC at the first sign of anything, but I guess it's no longer necessary. Yeah!

I only eat the outside, not the innard. It does not taste like chicken at all. Sea cucumber is a delicacy in some region of China.
