It is true that we reefkeepers need to be responsible for the health of our livestocks and take citicisms for our carelessness and ignorance and what not, however, I don't feel cwa46's comment is appropriate even if this thread is in The Sump.

(I am guilty of clam killings, so I am a bit touchy there...)

cwa46, if you have something useful to add to the thread - great. If not, please keep your rude comments to yourself. This isn't the sump...

OK, OK, I was just up here posting because you are always asking us to post "upstairs".

Dawn--depends on bioload. Lots of fish or other tankmates that use more O2 will make the tank and its inhabitants suffer more quickly. Corals only and you can get by a lot longer.

I lost a substantial portion of my livestock when my tank lost circulation for 12 hours once--most of the fish, my clam, most of my inverts; mostly only the corals survived, and 2 or 3 small fish.

It really depends on the system as to how long it can surivive without power.

Now I have backup power so I don't have to go through that again...

cwa46-

dude, its a clam and it was an honest mistake, happens ALL the time. It's a frickin invertebrate. Do you yell at people when they swat a mosquito? I'd hate to eat a hamburger in front of you.

While I can barely believe you tried to compare clam murder to dog murder, even if I did run over my dog, I'd still want some sympathy from my peers.

Is that too much to ask? We all make mistakes, and one day you will too.

I think in Chip's case, he had everything consolidated in a 10g. Poor clam probably couldn't compete in the oxygen depleted water :(

Just turn off your Sump mode next time you come upstairs :D

Clams take O2 out of the water--they do have gills. When circulation stops, the level of dissolved O2 in the water drops, and at some point, the clam will suffocate--as will anything else in your system that uses dissolved oxygen to survive--such as fish, inverts, etc.

The capacity of salt water to carry dissolved O2 is substantially less that for fresh water; thus, loss of circulation can mean disaster pretty quickly in a saltwater system.
