Yes people keep them as pets. We have a few for sale (not really a hot item) at the place where I work.

They are best kept by themselves with a piece of live rock for shelter, a deep sand bed (also for shelter), and a good filter.

The larger speicies do bust tanks when they get older.

Just a strange pet to keep, pretty, but strange.

They are actually great pets. They have a lot of personality, and can even be trained to an extent. You just have to keep them in their own tank with plenty of sand and live rock to burrow in. If they don't feel threatened they shouldnt try to break out of the tank. If they feel trapped, however, they can and will break through the tank without a problem. Because of this a lot of people like to use acrylic tanks for a mantis. As far as being hurt by them, it is definitely possible. But if you use common sense and caution you will have no problem. Just don't try to hold him or hand feed him
