Everyone please keep your eyes open for a used Deltec MCE600. That being said READ ON!

So i was thinking to myself... self... if you're going to upgrade to a 60g cube that is 25inches deep (same as my 37g tall now), why not go with a 100g cube that is ALSO 25 inches deep? At 30x30x25 I feel like I should still get an adequate footprint with my 250w DE MH pendant.

Now the only variable is skimming. I have an AquaC Remora (which I could definitly sell to help with a DELTEC price, but I fear I may have to upgrade to a Deltec or somthing (as previous posts have mentioned) to filter the 100g. But, I donno. would a MJ1200 handle a lightly stocked (fish I mean) tank of 100g? I know thats pushing the envelope a bit. It may at least get me bye untill my wife lets me take out a loan for a DELTEC HOT hehe.

Chime in on this one guys.. n please keep your eyes open for me. THANKS!

What a great community!!!!!!

I just think a 100 cube would be COOOOOOL.

Do you mean a MJ1200 for circulation? Or for your current skimmer? I am not sure if a 250 de would be adequate for that size tank. Especially with anenomes. I have 2 of them over my 46, but that would put you at 2.5w per gallon with the common formula of 5 watts. I am by no means the expert here, but that is my thoughts.

There seems to be several on sale at the 'other' forum. Just saw one for $300. Deltec's seem to be the 'in' brand right now. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with that particular model. Just that people would more or less, rather not see a HOT skimmer. The AquaC would suffice in the short term since it'll be a new tank anyway.

A single 250W pendant likely won't provide enough spread for the 100g cube. If it was a 250W DE in the new Lumenarc, maybe.

the light would get you started and you could place your specimens in the middle of the tank under the pendant and then add lower light requiring species around the edges. adding another pendant later would most likely help out a lot. your anenomes will move to the light so make shure there is nothing in the way while they find there new home, or they may get knocked over or smothered.

What ya do is set up the 100 with what you have. Be all happy and smiling for a week.

Then start looking concerned, but dont overdue it. When the wife asks whats wrong start the hints..."I know we need to wait and save up some cash but this little remora just isnt quite big enough...yes that halide works but I fear for the health of the animals off to the sides." etc etc soon she will be saying buy stuff. :D

Or at least thats the plan.

Why not drill the 100 and get a sump with a good skimmer? Might be cheaper than a Deltec.

I realize id be at a low w/g ratio, but the footprint is basically the same as my current aquarium, only I wouldnt be wasting all the light off the back and front.

Thats why the w/g rule is kinda goofy. I'm just not sure how to measure what I really need in a cube. If it were a 100g that was 4 ft wide I'd definitly say YEA MORE MH.

My current tank is 37g with measurements of 12front to back x 30 wide x about 30 tall. The 100g is 30 x 30 x 30.

The only differance in the 100g and my current 37g tank is that it is deeper front to back by about 18 inches. The depth and width are the same. That being said I KNOW that I could keep the EXACT animals in the 100g tank that are in my 37g tank if they stayed in the same footprint (really wasting 9 inches on back and front or 18 inches on front.

The thread musn't die yet.. MORE THOUGHTS GUYS>> MODS>> CHIME IN les go .. tell me the bad news n the good news :)

THANKS !

The bad news: More bigger toys = more money.
I completely agree with the go for it attitude and have it drilled for sump. Not that I know anything at all.. Seems like your theory of lighting would work for at least the time being. I'd bet most of the MH users would tell you that a 250 is pushing it for a 30" deep tank if your full of SPS any way.

Whats the worst that can happen?... You get the 100, your corals and anenomes are unhappy, you pout to the wife, you go deeper in debt.
No big deal see. :D

haha dont get the wrong idea, my wife actually loves our aquarium. It's the single most expensive "fixture" in our home. And people that visit love it! It's ALWAYS the first thing ppl notice. Not the couch, the 50 inch HD Flatscreen, or the burber.. its the aqurium. The wife isn't the prob its just that we DONT go in debt for anything execpt cars and houses :) Thats it.

Hmm u do have me thinking though. we get a decent tax return this year, we will be closing on the sell of our old home in 1 week, and making a few k, AND because of that be consolodating 2 bank accounts (which will initially appear that we have a bigger cash flow).

So if i DO UPGRADE lights what kinda light do i pick up? Id almost be forced to go with 2 pendant spots to get it into a 30 inch footprint. Most double MH pendants are at least 34 inches wide.

gonna start a new thread to keep track of this new line of thinking check in there :)

Some of the Remora's have been used with the Mag line of pumps up to a Mag 7 I believe. Using a bigger pump than the MJ1200 might punch up the skimming power of the Remora until you can get a different skimmer if that is your goal ?

i WAS wondering about a bigger sub pump. I dont want to damage the skimmer though. I could always call AquaC they are always very nice and helpful in customer service. Head over to my other post.. I've kind of restarted there witha new line of thought.

the larger pumps are being used on the pro model which is larger in size. the mag pumps will give more flow and pressure but the smaller unit will be still to small for this tank. the crossover from the regular to the pro i believe is 75 gal. on another note i think mrc is developing a hot skimmer that might fit the bill perfactly. waiting to see.

If you dont want a closed hood. I think that a couple nice pendants can look real nice if you keep the wiring spaghetti to a minimum.
For open look, Hamiltons are the nicest looking I've seen. I have no clue of their ratings. Otherwise, the stick with what you know method usually works.
Glad to hear your wife supports your habit, I mean hobby.
