Hi all, I will be putting together a 70 gallon reef system in the next two months and wanted to get some opinions on my plans, mostly for circulation. I will be keeping mostly sps, but a healthy mix of a few lps and an cloned e. quadricolor anemone. The 70 show will be 36" by 18" by 25", and i will have about a 800-1000 gph return pump (not sure which one yet) on an oceans motions squirt(4 outlets), oscillating flow from one end of the tank to the other. I also plan to have 4 Mj 1200 on a wavemaker. I am kicking around the idea of adding a tunze stream pump, but am not sure if the tank is too small, for even their smallest model? I will also have a little more flow from a refugium mounted above the tank, but not much. So- do you think the 800-1000 gph oscilating return and four MJ's will be enough? That should be about 1800-2000 gph in the tank...

Lighting will be 2 x250w DE pendants, plus 4, 95 watt VHO, all on IC electronic ballasts. 20 gallon sump and ER skimmer, ca reactor and auto top-off.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Best, Peter[/i]

Hmmm. I think you've got plenty of flow. Four MJ1200 and a ~1000gph pump should move plenty of water for a 3' tank. A tunze stream should only be considered if you have some clearance above the water line for the water to slosh around. The stream will move a wall of water that can spill out in a 3' tank if your water line is pretty much to the top of your tank.

I was thinking along those same lines Len- thanks. Rob, is that the only circulation in your tank- and what are you keeping? Have you had any overflow problems like Len suggests might happen? I think the 58 is the same footprint as the 70, just a few inches shorter, so I would be interested to learn what other circulation you have...

Thanks, Peter
