How fast does a purple tang grow? I have one that is just under 2 inches and I'm having to get rid of my 65 gallon reef tank  I'm having to get rid of it because after I graduate I'll be moving into an appartment again. It will be acouple of years before I can move into a home. I'm going to downsize into a 30 gallon. I know the answer to this question, but have to ask anyway...could I keep a baby tang in a 30g cube? I'll try and find someone to look after it in Portland when it grows, but how long would I have? I know the size of a tank it will need when it reaches adulthood (120+). I'm not ignorrant, just desperate. I don't want to get rid of my baby

Generally, most might agree that the PT has a slower growth rate than say...yellow tangs. I special ordered a baby about 4 or 5 years ago with the intention of upgrading. He was about the size of a .50 piece. He's been in my 40g ever since. He's about 4" now, and will soon be moved to a 90g.

2 years in a 30g isn't the best situation for it, just try to give it as much room as possible with less live rock and sand.

Good luck!

Are you sold on the 30g? Have you considered a 40g breeder...nice and long. :)
