I was going to use the left over mouse pad (used for my closed loop), but it has some plastic shield on it. That made me nervous about introducing that in SW for a long period of time.

Anyone have any ideas that are safe in SW and won't collect nitrates?

i found a great option at Petsmart. they are a pack of two dark gray filter pads apprx 4"x5", pretty stiff and very porous. they weren't cheap, about $7 for 10 cents of product, but worth it. i put one under my mag in the sump and one under the skimmer pump.

Styrofoam doesn't leach much and is usually really good & really cheap (free) to come by.

Just go visit your LFS, by a bunch of livestock and ask for a styro box to transport them in. - Usually they're more than happy to get rid of them that way.. :D

While you're acclimating your new additions, shave the styro down to suit your needs.. - You don't want to float the pump too! ;)

Course, the other option is to stalk out someone buying a put-it-together-yourself furniture kit at your local megalowmart and wait for them to unpack everything at home and sneak in and steal their precious styro out from under them..
