Hacked my colt coral into two pieces (hack is a rough description as this was surgical perfection), and along with a waterchange, decided to put some carbon in the sump.

How long do I leave it there?

I have never used carbon before, but then again this is also the first time I have cut up a softy...

Come on!

A week?
3 days?
Just take it out when I feel like it?

The few time I have run carbon I leave it for a week or two. I don't know what is the max time that it is benifical. I only use it when I do large fraggings or if I am having issues.

I generally run an activated carbon reactor full time and change the carbon every 4-5 weeks; although it probably loses much of its effectiveness after two weeks. Sitting a bag of carbon in a sump is virtually useless, so you can leave it there as long as you like. There's certainly no harm and very little to no benefit.

I have it in a highflow area near (read very near) the return pump. This should provide enough flow for benefit...

Thanks for the answers though. I'll try two weeks!

I think the chemical absorbtion of carbon time line is much longer than getting gunked up by stuff time line for carbon regardless of flow areas. I typically run it in a reactor (use my phosphate reactor now since I got those under control) and I try to change it every couple weeks. Depending upon how much you use will dictate the time frame too, since carbon "upstream" will start absorbing stuff in the water column before the stuff "downstream"

Hi, a friend of mine fraged a large soft coral then put it right back into his 155, the coral relased toxics into the tank and killed some of his corals, after fraging i would not put it back into the tank for a while, wait a bit, for the last 10 years i've been using carbon 24/7 there's lots of chemical warfare going on in my 125, using carbon 24/7 never hurt anything in my tank, i change it out once a month, i use Black Diamond, good luck.
