I am looking for the name of a fish. I believe it is a blenny. It stays on the bottom. it can be 4+ inches. It has a very large, mean looking face. Almost looks like a grouper or eel. I believe it is brown with bone colored blobs liek a bumble bee grouper. It will often only show its head from the rock work-kinda of like a eel. Any suggestions? Please help.

No the lawnmower blenny looks liek an angel compared to this thing. Double the size of the head. Lawnmowers are grayish, these are brown/maroon i think. It has been over a year since I seen one.
Aqua Oceans in NJ had one in their 92 corner reef display tank. I may track down their number and call.

They change a good bit and get rather large. Pholidichthys leucotaenia some call them engineer gobies. They dig a good bit and are pretty cool fish.

They are fairly common here -they can be kept in small groups, they are very friendly to tankmates, eat well, very hardy, they dig and will topple rocks if not secure on the bottom and they need a large tank as they grow. Great fish and rather cool. :D Good luck, jt.

The Engineer goby is also commonly referred to as the Convict Goby. It is in a separate family from the gobies and blennies. Its markings change throughout its life. Consistently, the colors involved are dark blue to black on white. As a juvenile, the markings are horizontal, running the length of the body. With age, they become vertical bands.

It should be kept in a 70 gallon or larger aquarium with a sand covered bottom where it may make burrows. It needs peaceful tank mates and plenty of hiding places. Small groups or pairs tend to do better in an aquarium, but need to be introduced simultaneously to the tank.

The Engineer Goby has been known to spawn successfully in an aquarium setting.

Its diet should consist of a variety of fresh or frozen seafood, brine shrimp, and mysid shrimp. It should be fed at least twice per day.

Approximate Purchase Size: 1-1/4" to 3"
