As I had discussed earlier, I had ordered this fixture to go over my 33 gallon Oceanic Cube.
I promised that since there was not much info out there on the board about it, I would give an overview when I started to use it.

Well,
I must say, the first thing that struck me about this light was the weight. As soon as I pulled it from the box,( the actual light fixture is obviously made of lightweight aluminum), I wondered if I was missing something.
The actual fixture head is so lightweight. I can see how it can be clamped to the side of a tank, and extend out over the surface without putting much torque on the glass.

The multi articulated mounting system is adjustable front to back , up and down, and the angle of the actual fixture head can be adjusted.
All the while the actual bulb remains perfectly parallel to the surface of the water. It basically clamps down to the side of the tank by screwing down 3 nylon bolts with landing pads on the ends that contact the glass.
I adjusted it down to fit my 10 gallon before I fired it up, and I had to insert a piece of 1" board behind the tank to give the fixture something to clamp to. The glass alone was not thick enough to provide a stable base.

There is no noticeable hum from the ballast. I assume it is electronic, although there is no information in the instructions, which I must say are very sparse with information of any kind.
As for the UV bulb cover, I assume the shield that is provided surrounding the HQI bulb, is actually UV coated. Again, there was no information indicating this in the 6 page instruction manual.

Now, for the best part...
I have never seen a 150 watt MH lit up before, and I had not seen a 20000K bulb either so my asessment of the light output may be a little biased.
The light it gives off is amazing. After having my tank under about 100watts of PC, the difference was astounding. The greens were brilliant, the blues were alittle dull, the reds were crisp, the whits were glowing.
I am so happy, I feel like a 6 year old boy on Christmas morning staring at the christmas tree.
I never knew what a difference it could make.

The bad news is the heat. As I said before, right now I am using it over my 10 gallon until I can get the cube back and set up. I plugged it in at about 6:30 and it is now 10:15. My ambient house temp is about 70, and the light ALONE has held my tank temperature at about 79.5* for the last 2.5 hours.
I cannot sit and watch the tank all day tomorrow to watch the temp,so I set up the timers to turn it on at about 9am and stay on for 3 hours, then shut down and fire back up at about 4:30 just before I get home. That way I will not have any suprises when i get home.

Anyway, I will write more as I find out things about it.
I am calling Coralife tomorrow toask them about the UV glass and a couple of other things.

Thanks for reading

sweat!

that thing is cool. I was wondering how the arm was. I guess u like it?

MH's will heat the water... you could have a fan blow across the top but that would increase evaporation...

when i setup my 20g sea clear I will buy that light.

very cool

Ok I e-mailed the coralife people and asked about UV rays. The reply I recieved says "The glass shield is tempered, but not UV coated and that the bulbs they use do not emit UV rays" Curious no UV ???

im not doubting what they said, but still find that hard to believe. i have quite a few Coralife MH units and run XM bulbs in them and i think that i would have noticed something in the 2 years that they have been up

Personally, I would not be worried about it.

Even plain old window glass significantly attenuates UV rays. When's the last time you got a sunburn while sitting in a sunroom despite the sunlight beating down on you through the glass?

The halide lamps in our hobby definitely emit some UV rays (for that matter, so do the fluorescent lamps). Being DE halides have no outer envelope they emit the most, but if you've got a glass pane between the lamp and the livestock you've got no worries IMO.

Ooops, Sorry.
I did say I would give some updates.

Well, 6 days later and the light is just evening out.
The color is great in my 10 gallon. It is not as blue as I thought it would be.
It is more like I thought I wanted it to look.

As for algae growth, I don't really have any strange things to report.
I am not sure what you mean by algae "due to the Coralife Bulb" but my Macro (feather and Grape) are doing well. I keep all of my parameters very well in check though, so there wouldn't be enough DOC for any spare algae to live on if it were to develop.

I didn't transition any of the animals into the light from PC, except to start the day out with 2 hours, shut it down, wait an hour, on for two hours, down an hour, up two, down one... all the way until 8 at night. I did that the first couple of days just for temperature's sake.
I finally got the weekend to leave it on all day and see just how hot my tank will get with it on there.
I was surprised. The little 10 started around 78.5 and the light only raised the temp up to 80.2 after 8 hours.
I programmed my house thermostat to keep the ambient house temp at 62 all day long, and then raise it at about 5pm to 68 when we get home.
I had a cold night lastnight though, and I cranked the house up to 72. The tank spiked at 82. So I have learned my lesson. I think the temperature will be more even when I put it over more water. (43 gallons tank/sump)

The light is about 8 inches over the water now, and I keep it on 8 hours a day.
Overall I like the light. If I could change anything, I think I would have gone to a 175 instead of a 150.

why a 175w? why not change the color temp of the bulb for more PAR... like a 14k or a 12500k... even a 10k...

do you think your 10g would need more light.... if u think about the old dinosaur rule thats 15w/gal... prolly more like 16 or 17 due to your rocks and such....

was it easy to adjust... I am gonna get it for a clear for life 20g system tank... only about 13gallons viewable.. 7 there is a rear partition for filtering...

I have read alot about these lights on other forums (NR.com) It seems that Coralife uses a bulb that is UV coated-regardless of what your CSR told you on the phone. The biggest problem people report about this is that you can not exchange the bulbs for non-coralife bulbs. This is because the other bulbs do not have the UV coating. Personally, I dont believe in Coralifes claim of no UV or their use of a coating. If you ever switch bulbs you will need to attach a shield to protect your corals. If you do some searching at NR.com you will find TONS of this info.

Well, I spoke to my old engineering professor lastnight at one of our Canoe Club meetings, and I told him about the UV dilema I was having with the MH bulbs.
I explained the situation to him and he chuckled.
He told me that the amount of UV radiation given off by a MH bulb is not enough to do any harm as long as there is a simple piece of glass betweent he bulb and the subject of concern.

I was always under the impression that specially treated glass would be needed. As it turns out, all silica based glass will act as a UV shield. Just average window pane glass is enough to filter it.
Coralife has included a "shield" over their bulb in all of the fixtures. This glass is enough to stop harmful radiation from reaching the corals.

LA-Lawman,

I wanted a 175 because this tank is only temporary. As I have posted on many other threads, I am currently in the process of upgrading to a 33+ with a sump. It is a show Tank that is pretty deep for a 30 gallon. I just wanted enough light to keep clams on the bottom of the tank.

Since I do not have the fixture over the tank yet, i don't really know what it will look like once I have it filled and all the rock arranged. So i may end up going with a 14K instead. I am adding in 90 watts of supplimental PC lighting, so even if it wasn't as blue as I like, I could just switch both of my PCs to 50/50's.

I will have to do some reading on PAR.
It's so mysterious. 8O

Dewman,
Just so you know (I learned the hard way) there is no such thing as a 175w DE fixture. A friend has a 150w de over her 30 and it is a nice light for that size tank, 30" long.

I have to say that bulb looks REALLY white for a 20000k bulb. More so because any camera will over saturate blues and it'd look even more blue than it should.

Really?? No 175 DE ?
Well, I guess I'll just have to be happy with what I have.

I agree that it does look a lot whiter than what I was told to expect.
The lamp is only 8 inches over the top of the tank too though.
Maybe shining through 22 inches of water it will give up more of the blue spectrum.

I will have to take a better pic of the tank now that the bulb has " burned in".
It is a little different color than that.

I was getting a lot of color shifting the first couple of hours I had it on. The pic I submitted was not long after I plugged it in.

When I get off work I will make an effort to use the "good" camera and actually clean up the tank a little bit before hand.

Well,
I know I was supposed to have this fixture over my 33 by now, but some things happened. The people living in our rental property decided to start a fire and so the last 6-8 months has been a real mess.
We basically have been paying 2 mortgages since the debacle, so I have put off doing anything. But we are now selling the rental house, and should soon regain all that we lost in the past 8 months from rent.
So, that means i can spend some cash and get the tank transferred.

Here are a couple of pics from the 10 gal. The HQI has been running for 8 hours / day for 7.5 months now, and all of the corals and animals are just doing great.
My candy cane has doubled in size with very little additional calcium added.
The BTA (around the back) is about 2 times the size and he seems happy.
As does the devils hand leather as you can see if you compare the pics.

Sorry the tank is a little dirty and messy. I went away to Colorado for a week and only left the feeder and topoff going. I didn't have anyone watch it for me. The topoff clogged and the tank evaporated down so there was a saline spike. The PH got a little whacky for a couple of days, but I got it back and everything seems to be coming out nicley again. (cpolt coral seems to be stunted in the back)
Usually, it is so tall it bends over at the surface of the water in the back.

Anyway, more updates will follow...

LA-Lawman, did you ever get your light?
