howdy... been a while. new job location, longer commute. the only thing that has really suffered has been my habitat. or to say "their" habitat...

since putting in a sailfin tang, whom i am not afraid to admit i am afraid of, i have been cleaning the tank half-assed every two weeks, and on the fourth week taking the sailfin out and putting the little ..... in a five gallon bucket for about an hour and half. been two months. so she has been out of the tank twice.

am i putting alot of stress on the fish to take her out of the tank for this period of time on this regular basis? the reason for the question is that tomorrow is the third time she comes out for hard-core cleaning......

(also lost a lawn-mower blenny in the last week... knew it was coming...)

How big was the tank again? and why are you removing the fish for cleaning? Why not clean around it?

he is removing because the fish scares him.

IMHO: That is nuts.

1, he cant / wont hurt you
2. you will / are hurting / stressing him

Yeah, leave the Tang in the Tank.

Wear gloves if he is that much of a tough-guy. He'll get used to you eventually.

Unless the tank is very small, like under 70 gallons, in which case he'll probably cut your arm off.

That happened to me once and it really hurt.

But seriously, leave the fish in the tank while cleaning.

What happened to the LMB?

the tank is a 55... we adopted her from a 30, which she got to big for.... the hope is that a 120-150 will be available by the time she needs it.

since putting her in, i admit, she comes at me with her sail extended, and i know that there are pointers on the tips, and i jump. not having to deal with my stupid fear of a dumb fish makes clean up a quicker endeavor. and with my truncated time table, it is helpful.

but i put a net into the tank and she swims right in, and sits there. i tried a divider in the tank and she knocked it down.

what kind of gloves are to be worn? regular dish washing rubber ones available literally everywhere?

WOW...scared of a tang lol. LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU IT IS A SOHAL AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Man that was close. whew. lol.

Seriously though, leave it in the tank while you clean as you are stressing it out by moving it. And I hope the tang police don't find out about the tank size or you will be looking at 20-life. Shhhh here comes a regal, don't make eye contact and no sudden moves. lol.

Bull crap. My tang "tanged" me once and it cut like a mother. I'm scared of him too. I watch him and create a distraction far from my working area when I have to put my hand in the tank!

Tang police!

I've seen sailfin tangs the size of a silver dollar. I'm sure one can be kept in a 55 for quite some time.

I've had a yellow tang for almost 3 years and he is still not full grown.
