I've been going to a couple of LFSs in the past few days after about a year without setting foot in one. The fish look really small. There are some species that are the same as I remember them, but all the common fish, like clowns, damsels, tangs, etc. look tiny. The clowns look like guppies and the hippo tangs are the size of a quarter. Even yellow tanks all look very small.

Is this just luck...like the local wholesaler got some small fish and I'm seeing them at the LFSs around town? Or has anyone else noticed this?

THey are more than likely tank bred. Did you ask?
They sell the tank breds fast as they can so they can breed and grow out more.

I only know for sure the clowns are tank bred. But even they are much smaller than they were when I bought mine a couple of years ago.

Then they are just keeping up with sales then and trying to make thier breeders into "fry mills" more than likely.

Tangs, damsels, all the common fish = tank bred to you? I'd love to find a source for tank bred tangs, do tell.

LOL, point taken, but I think he has a point, at least with the Tangs.

Tangs aren't captive breed or captive raised yet, are they?

Not coincidentally, about three weeks ago stores here in Taiwan all got huge shipments of tiny Regal (Hippo) Tangs. Tiny quarter-sized and smaller. I was amazed at not only how many stores had them, but also at how many each store had! They were selling cheap, too, about 1/3 the price of a 3-incher.

I figured it's a seasonal thing, as in late March happens to be an amazingly easy time to net TONS of juvenille BTs in the Phillipines/Indonesia. Maybe related to spawning? I don't know, anyone?

I like to buy small too. Easier to quarantine.

I have a clown fish the size of a guppy in a 3 gallon bucket with a rock and an air stone. 4 days without a water change and he hasn't fouled the water up at all.

I've had larger fish in a 10 gallon QT that needed water changes every other day just to keep the fish alive.

Having worked in the wholesale side for nearly a decade, your right on the money. It's a seasonal thing.

And yes, no tangs area being captive bred at the time.

FYI GreshamH this:
GreshamH your an arugumentative $#@. go play in traffic will ya.
was a joke. Hence the emoticon i used that is described as "razz" under the emoticon listings.

Any who.....back on track :)

I never said tangs were tank bred. I did make a short and broad
statement though. ( just like you did lumping damsels and tangs in the same sentence as being tank bred to me) :D

Here is a company that captive breeds angels, and dwarf angels.
http://www.rcthawaii.com/rct/1.htm

Longnose Hawk fish have been bred in captivity, Lion fish, CLownfish,
Cardinals, a whole slew of damsels (the easiest fish to breed) are also tank bred frequently for the trade, dotty backs can be bred now too....ect ect ect
No triggers, morays, tangs, other species of hawk fish and a big slew of others have achieved tank breeding for the trade yet though as per the searching I did on google for the list that are above.

I think your mistaken who posted what fragmaster. You may feel the need to apologize, or what ever you just did, but I moved on a while ago, and let your comment slide of my back!

IF you do feel the need to do such things (posting out of line comments) in the future, do it in a PM or email and don't subject the rest of the board to such nonsense. Keep it in the sump!

Maybe we could use a little more sump up here and a little more reef in the sump.
