Is it possible to use 3 Iwaki pumps to drive 1 OM. I have these pumps on hand, the sump is drilled for them, this would be easier than plugging holes in the pump and going with 1 pump. The thought is that the out puts would T into 1 larger pipe, then hit a 4-way and to the tank. The 4 way has no min reqirements so if a 1 pump failed I wouldn't have to woory as I would have 2 others going.

this was debated in our local club (I believe) some time back where someone had 2 teed into one, and I believe the consensus is that will cause backpressure against each other, it's not like the pipes have 1 way gate valves or anything :)

Yes you can. You need to manifold the together. If you just tee them all together you will have back pressure problems.

Unless the tee was the same size as the pump out lets you were seeing the effects of trying to pass a lot of water through a pipe that was not large enough.

Waz: Which very well could be the case, these were some fairly powerful pumps, pushing through a tee that was the same size as the output on the two pumps.

Paul fr OM is quite a helpful guy, might try giving him a call of e-mail.

Ditto that. OM has great customer service. If my goal on my new tank was not minimal pluming I would uses another one.
