I have always read that before performing your water change you should try to match as closely as possible the parameters of the freshly mixed sw to the tank water. I do this for temperature and salinity and I put a ph in for 24-48 hours before doing the water change, but.........

As it relates to calcium/alk levels, how do you do this? Do you put additives in the water-change water? Or do you just go with the levels that the salt mixes up at?

Just looking for opinions on the matter b/c most people maintain calcium and alk levels in their tank well above what the salt mixes up at.

Thanks for your input.

You can adjust Ca/Alk levels in the water change water by dosing Calcium Chloride and Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda). If you do a search here you'll probably find more details...

If the water change volume is small in relation to the system volume, personally, I wouldn't worry about it (assuming you're maintain Ca/Alk levels in the main system).

Personally, I only make sure the salinity and temp is close. I've found those two variables are the most likely culprits of shocking organisms. I used to try to balance pH by aerating the water (never did bother with Ca, alk, or other elements), but I've since found little benefit to this extra step.
