I saw the specs and it seems like the G-3 itself is 25 inches high, so how much space is needed total to remove the collection cup? For easy maintenance? Thanks!

Something like 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

The skimmer has been resized and the one from ASMSKIMMER.com is 23.5". It takes about a 1/2" or less to remove the cup. I have 25" for mine and I and about 2" from my cup the the bottom of the tank.

G-3 is in the mail as we speak! Now, what water level in the skimmer section should I be aiming for?? I'm getting ready to setup my baffles and was looking for some suggestions on the height! What do you guys think/have it at?

just a few inches for removal. enough to unlock the twist mechanism.

'about the same clearance needed to remove the cup on the ev-120.

FWIW - I have owned an EV-180, ASM, ER.

hats off to customer service of aqua-C. BUT.... the ASM g3 would serve you better. finer bubbles than the aquaC and lower wattage pump. complete plug and play and good adjustability.

The aqua_C was moody, after a feeding it would not skim for 4-5hours and then required adjustment. MY ER,ASM and now my reefmania all adjust once and fu-get 'bout it

asm is the best choice. if you can get a recirc model.... better skimming...

Mines at ~10". If you want the level in the sump higher (skimmer compartment) can make some sort of platform that the skimmer can sit on.

Just got my G-3 today and I'm excited! The latch of the pump end cap came broken but I've e-mailed asmskimmer.com about it. Now, some quick questions.

If I were to do a circulating mod and have all my drain water run into the skimmer, would I have to control how much water is going in or does it not matter?

Also, while breaking in, should I just let the collection cup overflow for the first couple of days or what?

Thanks!

Congrats :D It's a great skimmer and should provide you long service.

For the recirc mod, you will need to control the water passed through the skimmer. I wouldn't run all the overflow water through it, but rather T it off and put a ball/gate valve on the skimmer's inlet to control the flow.

During break-in, i usually lower the water level so it doesn't overflow. Actually, during break-in, my skimmers usually don't produce much foam. Your tank must have a lot of stuff the skimmer wants to take out ;)

Thanks Len! I set the outlet pipe a little lower than the bottom of the collection cup just because that's what the instruction sheet recommended it. Should I lower it?

And if I do a valve from my overflow directly into the skimmer, how much water would be reasonable? I'm currently using a Mag 5 as my return pump so my drain flow is probably somewhere around 200-300 gph after that 4.5' rise. But I've thought about upgrading my return pump to a Mag 7 or 9.5 (I'm not really sure if it's necessary... do you think?) and wanted to know about how much gph the skimmer should receive.

I just put it in 30 mins ago! I'm really excited! I'm considering doing the recirculating mod (just because people have said it skims even better!) and adding a "gate valve-less" gate-valve mod (maybe a tee, an elbow, and some pipe down to the water line??) just to help with splashing and all that jazz (and no outlet foam...). Thoughts?

Lower it for now until things stablize.

If you're using the Mag 5, you'll have no problems allowing all the water through the skimmer. I was thinking you had a bigger pump. I think a good range for the ASM G3 (if Deltec's recommendations apply) is about 300-400gph.

I've never done the gate valve mod since I found the regular outlet quiet enough. But you should go for it if you want :D

Well, is my turnover way too small for my tank? I know things are fine now that I'm still FOWLR (or not fine?) but in a couple of months, when I start corals, I presume I'll have to up it, right? Which Mag should I shoot for?

And I think I'm going to start a new thread for this, but if I were to do a fuge in my sump, should I have a controlled amount of water go into it (probably a 8"x12" section in my sump) and flow over the set borders to the return? Or can I just have the skimmer section to the fuge section and then the return, and therefore running all of my water through the fuge? (200-800 gph if I need to upgrade)

The first option will definitely be trickier to lay in my 29"x12" sump but what sounds better? I've read and read and read but I'm somewhat confused about the pros and cons of my two (and probaly only) options. One thing I know is that I definitely want a refuge and do not seem to have another option besides having it in my sump. The skimmer is a little bigger than I expected so things are even tighter but can be managed, I think.

What does everyone think? Len?
