I put a large serpent star that was on the way out (see thread in Invertebrates) for about 3 hrs. with Melafix. He had what looked like lesions opening up. I have a small amt of sand, several small pieces of live rock, and a sponge in the trickle filter. Do I throw all out, including the rock? Thank you.

Melafix is just tea trea oil extract.

Toss in some amquell and run some carbon. Rinse out the sponge filter. It shouldn't hurt anything down the road.

It also doesn't cure anything either.

Yes- I know- but I worried that there might be something left behind by the star. The qt reads zero for ammonia & nitrates.Did you see my thread in Invertebrates? Some weird things are happening in my reef tank since the star was sick- (2) sarcophytons closed and slumped over, orange fungia- receding, small acans closing, and alveopora mostly closed today. The rest closed yesterday, or day before. Pectinia, caulustreas, open brains, goiopora, orange sponge, giant squamosa and fishes seem okay. I read a slight amt. of ammonia in tank after doing a 25% water change today and yesterday. I'm running Chemi Pure and carbon, also added Prime today after I saw the reading (like Amquel)

There is always the possibility of a virus or bacteria. I had a linkia star that brought in something that killed every other star in the tank. Some kind of disease. Not a water quality issue.

Not sure if you should worry about that.
