I'm contemplating a few fighting conches, but my concern is them moving around the sandbed enough to cause rockslides. Any experience with conches and rockslides (or not having problems with this issue) is appreciated
I have never had them knock over the rock but have had them get wedged in places and I would have to move them. If the rock is on the bottom of the tank and "fitted" together I would not worry to much. LR seems to knit together once the corals and coraline algae start growing well so maybe you could wait a while before adding them if you have a lot of concern.
No problem with rockslides here. Good algae eaters.
I've had several die before I gave up on them. They appeared to lose the ability or desire to move and would continue to eat just they could reach. It might have been a crab or my giant worm bothering them.
no issues with my fighting conch.. then again its a small'un about 1.5 inches at most and my rocks are MUCH large than that for their to be any worry of toppling, I don't think they burrow under rocks so much as sift around them.
I recently have my 5 year old S. Alatus croak I have no clue why but I'm kinda heartbroken. It was usually under the sand but has never ventured under a rock as far as I can tell. No avalanches.
I have a five year old fighting conch and a strawberry almost as long. They are pretty big and never went near the rock much. Now that I'm removing my sand I am thinking I have to find new homes for them.
My Fighting Conch sayed on top of the sand and did a good job. I have a "zebra conch" now and it hides in the sand. I have never had a rock slide from either of them.
I have a queen conch and it is now about 7" long, maybe a bit longer. I have plenty of square inches of sand so the conch moves around quite a bit. Occasionally it knocks over the clams, and has bumped the rocks a little. He/she will climb on the rocks occasionally, which is really strange to watch. My wife is freaked out by the bug-eyes on stalks, and the foot.
I have 3 conchs, not quite sure of the kind, there is a possibility that they're all queen. 8O Either way, I've never really had a problem w/ them except they ran over some yellow polyps once.
