Hello,

I have a 55 gal tank w/ a built-in corner overflow. I also have a 30 gal tank sectioned acting as my sump/refugium. I currently have a pondmaster 350 as my return pump. I'd like to increase my flow in my tank. Do you guys/gals think that a Mag 9.5 is too much water exchange for my tank?

Thanks,
Mark

Going with a larger return pump might not be the best way to go about getting more flow in your case. Adding some in-tank powerheads might make more sense.

Most reefers prefer low flow through their refugiums. If all the flow from the larger pump will pass through the fuge in your sump/fuge setup, that's something to consider. Also, more flow through your overflow/sump can result in more noise and/or microbubbles.

If those are not big concerns for you then go for it. The Mag 9.5 should be fine although you might have to restrict it a tad bit with a valve if it's too much for your overflow/drain setup.

Ditto to what Chris said. Lots of people, myself included look to have the flow through the sump be as close to the flow through the skimmer. So for me that is where I would target the sump flow.

Thanks for the info. I've got a Mag 7 driving my Nautalius TE. Ever since I tried the 9.5 I haven't been getting as much gunk in my protien skimmer.
I guess I'll have to get some power heads. :(
