i cranked down a little too hard on a couple 1" bulkheads used to plug a couple holes drilled in my sump. i heard a crack (glass is fine). looks like the nuts may have slipped a groove on one side. they are on tight as hell, and i am sure they will not leak. anyone ever have this happpen?

Yeah, in fact, I slipped a nut on a few occusions that make it useless since there is not much thread on it.

I would redo the tightening again, since you never know when will it slip again, make a big mess when that happen.

You do not want them that tight.

Make sure you are installing them correctly, hand tighten them and then 1/4 turn with a wrench.

No tighter unless it leaks....

Ditto. Overtighened bulkhead is prone to problem later. Some right away when the gasket got squeezed out of shape.
