Lost a 4 week old frag to RTN last night. Everything was good before bed, woke up to my purple and green acro dead. a couple other frags next to it are showing signs as well, so I dipped in lugols this AM. Dang dang dang. Anyone know of anything else I can do to stop it? Water parameters are pretty good, dKH is a little high at 13.1 but it is dropping not raising.

Nitrites 0
ph 8.2
temp 77
ammonia 0
nitrates 10
sg 1.024
ca 390

Nothing new has been added since the last 4 frags about a month ago, one of which is the deceased. There was a tiny tip that was still alive when I got up this AM so I clipped it and hopefully it will recover. Any ideas?

Could be due to the dkh being really high, and the ca being low. You want to shoot for a dkh of 8-10. Are these frags of established, aquacultured or wild colonies?

aquacultured frags. The tip that I fragged in hopes of saving was gone in about 30 minutes after having cut it. When they say RAPID tissue... they mean Rapid!. Hopefully it won't spread to any more. I have been dropping the dkh for about 3 weeks now, with water changes and not running the CA reactor, but obviously still high.

Well as far as I know (and that's not always terribly much ;)), RTN is not a disease that jumps corals, sure it'll consume an entire colony quickly, but it's not a waterborne illness.

I've only had the STN though, so who knows.

I think my birdsnest had it once, and I lost a few inches of it because of it. Luckily I was able to cut off the dead parts. That same colony was also touching another coral colony and THAT colony soon developed it.

Where did these frags come from???

I had it before with an tricolor acro, and it does happen fast. The only thing I could blame it on was rapid temp changes and possible low Calcium. I have not saved one once it started RTN. Sorry for your losses.

BTW .. ive also bought a lot from Jenn in CANTON at Imagine ocean. I've never lost one of her corals. If you visit her tell her SnowManSnow sent ya!!!

They dont carry anywhere close to the variety and number, but at least they dont die of RTN!

I've been seeing that some vendors were getting in aquacultured stock from slightly cooler waters. I believe it was around 74 degrees.

Not many of us are able to maintain these temps without the use of a chiller. I normally avoid corals from stores, but would especially avoid the ones that these local vendors brought in. The noobs were awestruck by the bright fluorescent colors of these colonies, but I didn't have the heart to tell them the coral was severely stressed and well on its way to bleaching.

I once had a bleaching episode, and after trying everything I could, I replaced my bulbs, which were suppose to be less than a year old. To my surprise, my acros immediately quit bleaching, and many started showing signs of improvement within 1 week. I'll never buy used bulbs that were suppose to only have been used for 3 weeks again. Were the acros in full coloration just before bleaching, or had some faded or turned slightly more brown?

It was full color right up to the moment they bleached and died. Hopefully it is a localized incident with the one coral.

Which store has a damaged bin? And why would you buy a coral from there?
