im thinking of building a fuge. when you run a fuge do you take the water from the clean side of the sump, then to the fuge, then back to the tank or do you go from the fuge, to the sump, then to the tank?

It doesn't matter where the source water comes from, but the 'fuge return usually goes into the tank so any critters leaving the 'fuge go into the tank.

Traditionally, a 'fuge as been a place for 'critters' to grow and multiply without predation, and then move to the display so they can be preyed upon. Recently, a 'fuge has come to mean any number of things from a place to grow macros to a remote sand bed.

What are you adding the 'fuge for? :D

Righty does the impeller from the pump damage the critters going back to the tank?

Holy crap! 8O That's a LOT of bio balls. No wonder you have some nitrates. Try taking them out 20% at a time for a couple of weeks until you have a lot less of them.

Yes, that sump can be made into a fuge. There are many plans on the net to do it.

Wings, the impeller kills many of the amphipods, but enough survive to keep the population higher in the tank than without a fuge. The smaller copepods survive in higher numbers because they pass through with the water.

I do.

As suggested, you can slowly remove them.

I'm not sure how your sump is set up, but youmight be able to use that area for the refugium?

Looks ok, I guess. How do you have it plumbed? Do you have a seperate pump just for that, or is your return back to your sump? Have you taken precautions for water overflowing?

(I'm asking because I'm interested...not trying to needle you :P ).

i have it going from the clean side of the sump, into the fuge, and then back to the tank. i simulated a power outage last night and everything stops with no overflows since the return pump to the tank gets shut off, the tank then has no water to fill the sump.
