Looking good, man. What pump(s) did you decide to use?

I decided to go with two BlueLine 70's. Running at 1750 gph with a head of 39 feet.

Hey, that long piece you used for the strainer, that is not glued is it?

Cause it will need to be cleaned, not often, but I have to clean mine every 3 months or so because it grows up with stuff.

Nope, I did not glue it. I know it will have to be cleaned. I will leave some room behind my rocks to get to it.

I also left room for me to get behind my tank. I have about 13 inches to access plumbing and work on various things.

Catastrophy!!!!

The threads on my pump were slightly damaged in shipping. Im no biggy on cosmetics of things; "the pump is still threadable and will work fine..." I said. I put this pump on the closed loop.

I WAS WRONG!!

Little did I know, the plastic impeller housing was cracked. Unknowing of the impending mess, I filled my tank up with tap water to test for leaks.

BOY DID I FIND A LEAK!! I got every towel in the house to try to keep the water at bay. Then after a few seconds...I remeber I have ball valves on the closed loop for such situations like this. I closed them and the water stopped. The water was about 4 inches above the sand jets.

Here is the damage, I never noticed it before.

I did get a nice big piece of rubber to go under the sump and pumps for vibration. It feels like the same material for belts in a car. My dad got it from this guy (he owed my dad a favor) and he had it to the correct measurements for my stand.

That had water under it, so I had to take my sump out. What a night!

Well today I got my new impeller housing. No Charge. Filled my tank up and the pump leaks still. Not in the same place, but through a hole at the bottom that is on the bottom of all BlueLine pumps. I just need to get a new pump. I guess there is serious internal damage. Somewhere it must have been dropped during shipping. So I cannot work my close loop yet!

The good news is my plumbing works (closed loop is still unknown). The main return/drain works great. The T off for my tank leaks a little at some of the ball valves. The actual valve leaks. Small leak from the center by the red nob. Everything else works great.

This is a full shot of my tank's plumbing minus the pump for the close loop. It would be in the lower lefthand corner.

My sump works great! My refugium is fed by a phosban reactor or any other reactor that I my put in my tank. I have only two pumps to run this tank. No need for powerheads or anything else. Just two BlueLine 70's.

That is all for today!

I would guess for a furture calcuim reactor feed. I plan on doing that on my new tank, just incase.

Glad to hear your pump problem was fixed so quickly. Are they on the quiet side regarding external pumps? Do you like them?

Lookin sweet! - Good deal on getting the leaks/pumps nailed down.

So how DID you connect those SCWD's anyway?? - Do they have a threaded version out now - is that it?? - They look a LOT cleaner and nicer than any other install I've done or seen so far.

Yeah I am working hard on getting that one pump to work.

The SCWD's are from the LFS where I work at. We got a bunch of thread starters and tools to make threaded PVC fittings or threading holes in PVC and other plastics. So yeah we thread them there.

Is there a place that threads stuff for you for free? I actually wanted to put a SCWD and didn't want to use tubing or anything. Your setup does look really clean and is what I would want mine to look like but I don't have a thread starter...

I work at a LFS. I did most of my plumbing there. I had some help with some pros. A pro did most of the close loop. I did most of my return and drain. The sump was made by the store I work at. We got a bunch of them. I learned alot really fast.

You need to find a hardware store or a plumber to thread it for you. Bring him your fittings that you will hook your SCWD up to.

Looks like right now I am going to need a chiller. My tank is 84 right now. I am just running pure tap water now. I got to try a fan to get water to evaporate faster so I can cool it down to at least 79. If not...I am screwed.

Anythoughts? How big you think I am going to need? 1/4? 1/3? 1/2?

My tank runs at 84-85F because of my pumps. I then run a fan flowing over the surface of my sump and brings it down to 78-79F. I'm happy with it, even if I get 2-3 gallons (quite a bit from 90 gallong total volume) of evaporation daily. Cheap (to buy and run) and quiet. :D

I am interested in that fan. How big is it? I got enough room for 10 inch fan. I am thinking 2 of them will fit just fine.

I can also put one in the sump. Where did you get that fan?

I got it from my girlfriend. She just had it laying around. She bought it at walmart. I believe it's 6 or 8 inches. It's a clip on and I'm happy with it. You just gotta be careful so that you don't get water in it or vice versa! :D

So yeah, after finding out my return jets have the same velocity as a pool jet, I figured I needed to dampen the flow. So I added a second jet on to each return.

Old next to new. (yes the outside pipes are bent. Its so they will fit my hood. I used a hot gun.)

p8230228xm5.jpg

I put a wide angle deflector on the first outputs beacuse they will be the strongest I predict. Then I put jet nozzels at the end for more pressure at the end. I hope they will balance out and give me something that will not rip the flesh off of corals. One benefit to this is more flow in differnt areas.

The wide angle nozzle makes a big differnce in flow. It really slows it down, which is good in my case. Even with the wide angles on the previous verison, they would create vortexs like a Seio or Tunze that are too close to the water.

I hope this will slow them down. My tank is empty. I am getting it ready for saltwater and sand. You can kind of get the picture in here what I did with the nozzels. Look to the back.

p8230229ol3.jpg

I also got a 10 dollar Honeywell fan for my hood. It can mount to the wall in a way the bottom will be really flush with the wall. I will push my stand back on to the fan. I like this because I will not have to mount it to the hood. They look nice and for 10 dollars it is just what I need. I will get one more, because I got plenty of room for 2.

This is the position for it to be mounted on a wall.

p8230230xr5.jpg

I will post pictures of sand and water tomorrow. I hope.
