right now i have a wet/dry with bio balls. i have a high nitrate problem though. is it best to get rid of the wet/dry and just build a sump with some macro algae? will that be enough filtration without the bio balls?

Yep, you've got the right idea. Dump the wet/dry and go with a refugium or better skimmer in its place. You don't need the bio balls.

If you're hesistant to remove all the balls at once, do it in a few steps. But I'd remove it all. Personally, I've removed bioballs all at once with no negative outcome.

Len,

I have bio balls in my wet dry and in my over flow. I have zero-5ppm nitrate for the last 2 years with this set up.

Of course I have like 1/5 the volume of bio balls that mike90 does! He's running a bio ball storage tank under his 90 gallon. :P Just kidding ya Mike.
