I'm aware that some folks are using some type of epoxy puddy to mount frags in there reefs. one is this safe? and my other question is what should i look for in the make up of it. the suff i have at work is called Water Weld states it contains epoxy and amine starts to harden in two minutes?

Thanks ,Tom

There are versions in the market that are specially formulated for aquarium use. They can be found at your LFS or online vendor.

The two best options for mounting stony corals are epoxy and super glue gel. I much prefer tha latter, but the epoxy is necessary for mounting colonies or creating certain rock formations.

It's available in white and purple (which makes it look like coralline algae). It's a lot messier to use than super glue gel. It's best to try to work with it in a separate container, as a lot of dust and residue is released. This residue is non-toxic in small amounts, but some report that their skimmers go nuts when epoxy is used in the display.

For small frags or nano-colonies, super glue gel is my method of choice. It's a lot easier to use and not nearly as messy. Be sure the type you choose is cyanoacrylate, which is basically a medical grade acrylic resin.

Have fun!

I used some plumbers’ epoxy from a local hardware store to mount a new gorgonian (the green putty that ends up being white).

I figured if it is not-toxic enough for you drinking water pipes, then it should be ok.

Fortunately it was...and nothing in the tank suffered at all.

I'm not a big fan of epoxying SPS corals. It works most of the time, but once in a while the epoxy's limited, localized toxicity kills the frag. I used to epoxy most of my SPS, but now I'm more accustomed to superglue gel or preferably simply finding a nice hole in the rock to wedge the frag into :)
