Would a Mag 24 be too much as my return pump? Closed Loop?

I'm debating on whether to do a Mag 9.5 for my return and keep my 3 Maxijets 1200 as well (maybe add a closed loop in addition later on),

or

go with a Mag 24 for my return,

or

another combination (if so, please elaborate! ).

At around 5', the 24 would be putting out about 1800 GPH (about 20X my volume). Could I go with the 24 and ditch the powerheads and discard the idea of a separate closed loop? And if so, what would be the best way to deliver the flow? Spray bar with say, 4 outputs? 6? Just an elbow for each output or maybe even hydors on each output?

Help me out guys! :?

You would probably have a problem with the overflows handling that much flow. I use a Mag 18 on my 125 AGA drilled tank and I would not go with a bigger pump. Most dual overflows can only handle a maximum of 1200 GPH(600 GPH per overflow).

I was actually thinking about modifying my overflow to handle more (just cutting the slots all the way across) but would that too much trouble and still not enough? I only have one overflow.

And if I go with the Mag 9, with the flow around 800 GPH, will I still have problems with leaving my overflow as it is then? I definitely don't have enough with the Mag 5, and the 7 still sounds mediocre. Thoughts?

This was all prompted because I found a deal for a Mag 24 for $90 bucks shipped, that was only used for about 1 month... It's either that or paying about $80 for the Mag 9 brand new...

Simply cutting more slots in the overflow wont make more water travel through it. The size the bulkhead determines how much water can pass.
Here is a site that will help you determine the GPH you can get trough your overflow. http://dslinux.dyndns.org/~denise/aquar ... l#drilling The more GPH you run through you overflow the noisier it will be. Also you may have problems with micro bubbles if you have a river running through your sump. For a tank that size 300-400 GPH will be just fine. Your skimmer really can only process so much water in an hour anyway.

If you want to use the 24 use it on a cloesd loop. The drain line on the 75 will not be able to handle the flow.

Sounds like a plan then. Alright, so which Mag should I use as my return then? I definitely want to go up and get more of a turnover than the Mag 5. What do you guys think? :?

If it were me ( the guy who knows absolutely nothing). Id get the mag 7.
You can always get the 9.5 and put a ball valve on it to tone it down a bit if it is to much. Again I will say, you dont really want to max out your overflows anyway. Noisy=bad

If you are planning a CL, the intake can be outside of the overflows (backwall etc), can you drill another hole?

You can run a CL without their products but check out oceansmotions forums photo section for layout ideas.

No drilling! Tank's up and running! :lol: I would just have the intake for the CL run over the tank like the output. The CL might be a little tricky for me (don't really know the best route to go) but we'll see if I can do it. :wink:

An over the back closed loop is no big deal.
