I need to split one return into two, so I am contemplating getting this instead of a Y junction.

Any positive or negative experiences?

I wouldn't use it. They cut your flow by something like 40 percent and are prone to having their gears bind in a way that makes it unfixable. I went through three of them before I learned. :D

Sounded too good to be true, like those zoomed power sweeps. Those suck so much they don't even mix salt water in a bucket.

Sub'cmndnte M. : I know how much you dislike simple, clear answers, so let me try to complicate this one for you.

I have a SCWD on my 800GPH return. I've only had it for two months, but so far I'm happy with it. I've heard they do have jamming problems, but I'm hoping that since mine is run on 'cleanish' water (inline after skimmer-filter sock-refugium-intake screens) it won't jam too soon.

I've seen some cool DIY mods where people take the guts out of the SCWD and replace parts with PVC to make the innards cleanable etc. If/when mine breaks, that's what I'll do.

Good luck.

My SCWD reduces the flow to a trickle. I have a Mag 9.5 running from the sump to the chiller to the SCWD then to the tank, and really, the water dribbles into the tank. I'm going to remove it and put it on it's own pump in a closed loop, I think, just to increase the flow in the tank.

I have one on my 20 gallon. Running a mag 7 I get great flwo throught the tank. I"ve had it 2 years and it's still good.

FOr $30 why not try it? It does eat a lot of the flow. The other option is an OceansMotions, which is going oin my new tank.

I have one hooked up to a Mag12 - worked well enough, though it does cut down on the flow a good deal - I think I might have had about 700gph

Ditto.

On my 110 I had 3 SQWD units, one on a mag 12 (return) and two on a Mag 18 (closed loop). For the price they do the job OK. You will loose a bit of flow. An OM squirt would be a better option IMO, but they do cost a good bit more.

I second the Oceans Motions. I have the squirt but I have the 2 way mod on it. Its the same as the SCWD but much much better. I had a SCWD. It lasted a few months.

I am using SCWDs, I am abusing the crap out of them. I hear their little gears grinding, working so hard. :P

Eventually I am taking them out and I am putting OM on the return.

my scwd produces a lot of micro bubbles. i have check my plumbing for air leaks, i have none so it has to be coming from the scwd. i am running a mag 9.5 also.

yeah, the pipe could not fit. It will be fine. Its not an excessive amount of bioballs.

SubCommand,

I would do the SCWD because they are cheap and pretty well worth the money.

I might try it on a powerhead, but not for my main line, which by the way I just built today. I actually bought a standpipe and bulkhead from Richard Durso, and put that in. The pump arrived today, and after a couple trips to the hardware store and a few dollars mis-spent on pipe fittings that didn't fit, I now have what I sincerely hope is a properly assembled return system as well. It bifurcates at a T junction, so that is where I originally thought I would put the SQWD.

The back of that tank reminds me of the movie Brazil.
