I am going to be setting up the new tank within a week, and was trying to find out is it best to skim during the cycle process or not?

If not then I can wait a month or so before buying an expensive skimmer, otherwise I must shell it out now along with everything else.

Thanks guys..

Ps I tried to search this out, but did not have any luck. However, I did find answers to about 36 other questions(give or take).

I'd absolutely recommend skimming while cycling, it's amazing what a skimmer will pull out of a tank with rock curing in it. It is absolutely neccessary? Nah. Will it be a big help that will mitigate the worst of the curing process? Definitely.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I was assuming that to be the best approach, but was hoping it could wait. Sounds like I will purchase a good skimmer this weekend. :(

Put me down as another in favor of a skimmer. Keep asking questions and looking stuff up.

Doni, the key to doing or adding anything with your tanks is understanding what the equipment or supplement does and how it impacts the tank. Too many people add this or do that without understanding why they are doing it.

That's like getting into your car and driving without knowing where you are headed. Eventually you may end up in the right place, but you'll have wasted time and money to get there.

Thank you. Again, I was sure the best approach was to use the skimmer because of what it pulls out of the water, but was just hoping that I can save a few hundred $$$ for at least a month or so. Silly for thinking it is even possible to save money in the hobby.

Very true. Although I may not alwasy know exactly how to get somewhere, I do know where I want to end up. So I focus on that, and yes I may "wing" a few things along the way. Sadly, that results in extra money waisted. You guys and ladies are so helpful.

Yes. I also do several water changes during cycling, which I have repeatedly seen stated is a bad idea. I don't get this. If I could cure my 50 lbs of rocks in a 10,000 gallon tank with a mega skimmer I'm guessing they would come out looking a hell of a lot nicer than if I cram them into a 30 gallon tub and never do water changes.
