How much money do two 250w MH lights add to the electricity bill? I don't want to end up wasting money buying lights if I'll never use them.

YOu MAY add a few bucks.. but nothin to break the bank.

Depends on what your electric rate is, how much power the ballasts actually use and how many hours a day you run the lights...

Considering you're in CA your electric rates might be high. If you're paying say $0.20 / KWH and you run the lights 8 hours per day each and we assume your ballasts actually draw 250 watts each (magnetics or "HQI" will generally draw more - if you're using electronics then 250 is probably pretty close) you're looking at about $24 per month.

assume 10 cents per kWh, assume 8hrs on per day. 30 days * 8hrs/day * .5 kW * 10 cents/kWh = 1200 cents per month or $12.

Okay, that's good. I don't want to buy my equipment and then end up selling it because of complaints from my parents. Thx. :)

Well unless you live in a hot area that uses a lot of A/C parents will notice a $10+ jump on their electric bill.

IF he has an independent income, why not offer to cover the extra cost, instead of asking mom and dad not to complain?
