Ok I have a 100g acrylic tank (18" tall) and it has a center brace along with acrylic around the perimeter akin to a eurobraced tank with a center brace, I want to remove said brace. My question is can I lay a series of acrylic pieces ontop (weld-on'd) and have sufficient structrual strength? How thick should I aim for? As I mentioned the tank isn't terribly deep although it is long (6 feet) I figure if I double up on the size I should be able to hit that bad-boy with a router around the top and voila instant bigger access.

Just don't know if there are any rules of thumb as far as how thick it should be, or even if I can sandwich stuff like this.

Gluing acrylic pieces should work (it's called "sistering"). Weld-on as I'm sure you know makes as solid a connection as you can ask for. Unfortunately, I don't know how thick you should aim the acyrlic braces to be. I think it would depend on how thick the perimeter bracing is. Also, acrylic is much more flexible then glass, so I don't know how that plays into the equation.
