I'm going to be installing (2) 1" bulkheads and want to know how far down from the top of the tank they should be. I've heard 3" for 1 1/2" bulkheads. Is this correct for 1" as well? How far from the sides of the tank as well?

Hey Bethany, I'm not quite clear about your question. Are you asking about how far the top of the bulkhead should be below the surface of the water for a closed loop applications? If so, it will depend on the pump's output (gph) and not the bulkhead diameter.

Not for sure, but I would put it at least one hole diameter from any edge. If this is a suction hole, put it at least half way down. If this is a return as long it is below the surface and not right on the edge anywhere should be fine.

Sorry. What I'm asking is how far down from the top of the tank should a 1" overflow be? I'm getting two holes drilled into my tank and want to know where I should place them basically :D

I would think this a very good rule of thumb when having aftermarket holes drilled in a tank. Im sure it would work for any return application. Whether it be for a CL or just a sump return.
As for over flow, Are you going to DIY overflow boxes? If so, as far down the tank as possible. If not, as high up as possible. With after market holes in the back of the tank for over flows you will have to get creative with your plumbing either way.

Beth, do you plan on overflow boxes? It's the safer thing to do. Otherwise, you'll want the holes at least 2" below the surface of the water if you don't want it sucking up air and gurgling.
