I have a green star polyp, a group of 3 green hairy mushrooms, a few stalks of xenia, and a long tentacle plate coral. Currently i add food every other day. Should i feed daily? Tank is 55 gallon. SHould they be fed with a direct approach, or is just mixing it in acceptable? THanks again in advance for your reply's...

thanks again. Looks to be a wide variety of opinions. I normally baste my rocks once or twice a week. I guess i will probably feed them every 2 or 3 days. I dont know really, almost more confused. In a different post you agreed my skimmer is week. It produces dark brown to black stinky stuff, and appears to be doing a good job. What kind of skimmer do you have Crissy? I thought i was doing good being it was rated for up to 100 gal and i have 55gal.

If you are getting dark stinky nasty stuff, then it is working well. What's your bio load....How many fish?

Some people swear by the sea clone but most think they are horrible. I have no experience in them. I had a red sea prism and I will tell you that is junk. Horrible.

I have a ASM G2. It's a in-sump skimmer.

glad you told me what a bio load was, because I was wondering..lol.
I am the one with the sailfin tang that you commented on earlier. I have a flame angel, 2 small blue damsels, small fox face, watchman goby, coral beauty, and the sailfin. A total of 7. Again, I do weekly water changes usually 10 - 15% and have a fluval 404(up to 100 gal) and an over the back filter rated 30 - 60 gal. Plus that lovely sea clone 100. I have a lot of snails and hermit crabs. 3 cleaner shrimp and 2 starfish. I have good janitors that work hard and are very cheap labor..

Sorry, I wasn't thinking.

You have a very high bio-load for a 55ga. You need to do more than just 10-15% water changes. I would say double it every week. Just the tang by itself craps all the time. Just keep up with water changes and you should be okay.

I have 7 fish in my 110ga.

2 blue hippo tangs
1 yellow tang
1 diamond goby
1 midas blenny
1 false perc clown
1 sebae clown

Various inverts.

wow.. Sounds like it is high, especially compared to yours. I have had them all for about 2 months, and had gradually built up to that. I nitrate always reads 0. I am always doing something to the tank, so i think my maintenance program is working so far....

Ocean Fresh Coral Vibrance Live Coral Food 2oz 125006
2oz Live Coral Protein Food with Astaxanthin

You know, I don't think you need to be feeding that stuff as often as you are, that small particulate food can really foul the water, and your green star polyp, a mushrooms, xenia don't need to be fed. That food says it is recommended for sps corals anyway, which you don't have.

When you say it smells "aweful", how bad does it smell? I wonder if it has gone bad??

I would feed the long tentacle plate coral something meaty once a week or so, like a little pea sized piece of raw shrimp. Just the stuff from the seafood counter at the grocery store is fine. Buy a small handful, keep in the freezer, and just cut a small piece off to thaw in some tank water.

Today i fed my plate coral a pea sized piece of fresh fish. He wasted no time grabbing it and pulling it into his mouth. The swallowing part took him a little longer, but he must have been starving.. I have had him about a week and a half and the LFS never mentioned feeding him pieces of fish or shrimp. SO thank you for the advice. I am going to feed him a piece once a week unless you all agree that it is not enought. Thanks again for all the much needed help.

Astaxanthin, a member of the carotenoid family is a powerful antioxidant. In vitro research demonstrates that astaxanthin is ten times stronger in scavenging free radicals than other carotenoids such as lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene, and one-hundred times stronger than alpha -tocopherol..............
