Niger trigger - Should I chance it in my 58G tank? Or am I looking for trouble?

If its a fish only, sure. If it's a reef with inverts? Don't

Yeah I've really converted to the school of thought that you don't want to take a chance on something that has a reputation for destuction just because you've heard a few people talk about no problems with it...

Same with angelfish, sure you see tanks of the month and the like with large angels in a tank full of SPS, but don't know how well that'd work with frags as opposed to colonies. I had a bicolor & flame in a tank with SPS frags (no large colonies as of yet) and the corals would grow but never noticed polyp extension at all, of course never noticed any nipping either... removed all the fish to another tank replaced them with "nicer" ones (chromis, etc) and everything has polyps now!

Absolutely not, reef or FO IMO. It's way too small of a tank.

They can be kept in very large reef tanks, minus any small shrimp. The Steinhart Aquarium has a pair in their 20,000 gallon tank. They get very big, and they need a lot of swimming room. I'd say 400 gallons as a minimum.

Speaking of small Matt, who's ass do you have to kick to get that Koran out of that little tank? It looks like a 40g breeder or something! And there's another fish in there too! (can't recall what kind... squirrel?)

Niger's get 24", don't they? ;)

Get a bluejaw, sargassum, crosshatch, or goldenback. Much safer.

Peace,

Chip

It's actually closer to 100 g I believe. :D

It will be moved in 2007 or early 2008. You've seen the place man, there's no space!

Really? 100g? Wow my 100g tank looks WAY bigger than that one.

But there's space! Stick it in with the gorgonians that really tall tank, although I think there's a French in there already.

Btw any idea if the tanks are going to the new place? I would love to get my hands on one or two... that might not fit in ;) Infact that little touch pool that's in a U shape would be a kickass tank! (although hard to move) And I'm sure they'll have the older speciality tanks back at the new place right right right? So any chance on a killer score? :D

I'm estimating. But it's definitely much bigger than a 40. :D

It's a queen, actually. :D It's also a Caribbean biotope, so it wouldn't fit anyhow. There really isn't much display space for non-reef safe fish. It's really the only spot it can be, at least on display.

I'm sure they'll be recycling everything they can; either for use as sumps, quarantine tanks, etc. What specialty tanks do you mean?

Well I recall the old Steinhart they basically just had concrete tanks with glass fronts.. now that you mention it I dont recall much of any "reef" tanks in the old steinhart.

Although one can never know for sure what an individual fish will eat, Niger Triggers are planktivores and don't eat corals.

Nigers are moderately reef safe but can get nippy. I had one I had to bat away from my arm constantly when trying to work in the tank - he liked to nip me every time I wasn't looking. They are moderately slow growing but you can expect them to get 12" + over time - they are stunningly pretty as adults in my opinion.

If I ever could do like a 1000 gallon tank I'd have a school of yellow tangs, a school of niger triggers and maybe one adult imperator angel.

The divers at the aquarium used to feed while they were inside the tank. This ended once those little red mouths started biting them. :D

Agreed. The issue is space as Matt indicated.
