Another one for u lawdawg.

Do you know of a water purifing system for the faucet to treat water for drinking and the fish tank? Need to invest in an all in one unit, if possible. Thanks

In the meen time do you recommend any particular brand of spring water to use for water changes and top offs? When i check the spring water should i check for just nitrite, ph, and nitrate(and is it ok that nitrate is saltwater test kit)? Anything else you would recommend testing? thanks. I am just very amazed at how bad that water is, even the filtered kind from my fridgerator. 8O

Well, do a search here, there are tons of threads about RO units and which is a good buy. As far as water to buy, don't buy "spring water" and don't buy distilled water of any type-that is made using copper coils and some people think that can have a bad effect on the tank.

Any type of bottled water that says it is made by reverse osmosis should work fine, and you should have no need to test it before use.

so do not buy any spring water? I checked nitrites on zephryhills water and it was zero. I also checked my water that i treated the heck out of with AMQuel last night. It had been aireated for about 4 days with a power head. THe amount was about 25 gallons. Checked nitrites only last night it was about 3.0. 8O My god man.. No wonder when i did all the water changes last weekend my corals got pissy....

I am unsure what to do at this point. My tank levels are fine, but i am getting a better understanding of everything (slowly). The nitrite that goes into the tank becomes nitrate(right)? Assuming that is correct all the water changes i did last week added more nitrates over time. I have read some of your other post about gunk building up in the sand bed from bad water, how would you advise me at this point going forward. Following is my plan let me know if you agree or disagree..

I am going to buy a bunch of spring water, or reverse osmosis today. I will use it for top offs, and water changes. I was not going to do a change this weekend, but am thinking about doing a 10 gallon or so after getting all of my info. Basically i was assuming that over time with top offs and water changes all the old nasty water will eventually be replaced. Does this plan make sense to you? I have had my tank running for 8 months now, is all the damage already done, or can it be fixed with my plan? Thanks

Your tank will be fine. As I SAID ;) spring water is not "reverse osmosis" -which is to say a more pure form of water so buy RO if you can.

As the bacteria catches up, your nitrite/trate will level out. The idea is to not add any more guck i.e. bad tap water and exacerbate your problem.

So, as I posted, I would test the tank's water say on saturday this week, and if it looks off, plan on changing some sunday.

If the tank levels are fine I'd just add makeup water for dehydration and not change any until the following weekend unless things get wonky again.

Thank you lawdag.

I just bought some purified water.. It is ozonatated- de ionized.. I think that is good, but not sure. Is this good water? Should i test it for anything in this new water? I know previously you said no, but just wanted to make sure.. thanks

It means that if I said "no" before, there really isn't a reason I would change my answer, now is there?

Ayup, it is simply another purification process, many reverse osmosis units also deionize the water.

As far as more info on water purification, try using the search button and library here for more info (or googling ), there's a ton of good articles/threads/info out there.
