I have recently started to cycle my tank and purchased some live rock from my local dealer. The live rock has quite a bit of growth on it including what looks like small young anemones. These have started to fall off the live rock which I guess means that they are dying. Is this natural for a new tank????

The Ammonia build up in the tank could possibly be killing them but I doubt it since they survived shipping.
Also they quite probably are Aiptasia anemones or Majanos which you definitely do not want in your tank anyway.

can you describe the small anemones more? i am afraid the polyps are aptaisa or majanos too, those are bad for your reef tank. but most polyps dont fall off rocks, they slowly waste away.

Aiptaisia start to roam around and spread. I just am starting over from scratch, thanks to these vile creatures. You must incinerate them. Make them die. Grinding them up only produces many more.

They are light brown in colour and have small polyps/spikes on the surface. There size is between 1cm and 5cm in circumference. I noticed today that most of them are turning a greyish white colour and dont look to healthy. If they are what you guys suggest they are, should I just get rid of them? strangelly, I have not had an amonia spike since I have had the live rock (3 days now) My nitrate and amonia readings are zero.
